PLAN 7: STOPOVER IN PORTLAND
If you arrive in Boston too late for a direct bus ride to Bar Harbor, you may want to consider an overnight stopover in Portland. Portland is a great little city, and overnight accommodations are less expensive than Boston.

There are a variety of lodgng choices in Portland. The Inn at St. John is located directly across the streeet from the Vermont Transit terminal.

Bus service between Boston and Portland is fast and frequent. Service is provided by Concord Trailways and Vermont Transit. During the summer, Vermont Transit operates one bus a day from Portland to Bar Harbor. In 2007, this bus left Portland at 3:15 p.m. Check with Vermont Transit for the current departure time. Concord Trailways has a 12:01 p.m. non-stop departure from Portland to Bangor. See below for travel between Bangor and Bar Harbor.
