If you arrive in Boston too late for a direct bus ride to Bangor, you may want to consider an overnight stopover in Portland. Overnight accommodations in Portland are considerably less expensive than Boston.

There are a variety of lodging choices in Portland. The Inn at St. John is located directly across the street from the Greyhound terminal and a short taxi ride from the Concord Coach / Amtrak terminal..

Bus service between Boston and Portland is fast and frequent. Service is provided by Concord Coach and Greyhound. Concord Coach offers daily service from Portland to Bangor. Greyhound has moved its Bangor terminal to Hampden, several miles south of the city. See below for travel between Bangor and Bar Harbor.

Bangor to Bar Harbor
There are various strategies for traveling from Bangor to Bar Harbor. Here are some ways to do this, starting with the least expensive:

1. Downeast Transportation departs Bangor for Bar Harbor year-round on Mondays and Fridays only. This bus does not operate on Monday holidays. It departs Concord Coach at 2:30 p.m. Downeast does not offer an afternoon pick-up at Greyhound, so if you arrive on Greyhound you will need to ride a taxi to Corcord Coach or the airport. 2. The Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle offers up to five trips a day from Bangor to Bar Harbor. Advance reservations are required.

3. Rental cars and taxis are available at the Bangor airport. The local BAT Community Connector transit service links Bangor bus terminals and the airport.
