MUSEUMS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Here is a list of local museums and educational tours that you can reach on the Island Explorer.

Abbe Museum
The Abbe Museum is devoted to preserving and celebrating the heritage of all four Native tribes in Maine: Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot. The original museum is located at Sieur de Monts Springs in Acadia National Park on the route of Blackwoods and Sand Beach buses. A new year-round facility recently opened on Mount Desert Street across from the Island Explorer transit hub at the Bar Harbor Village Green. For more information, call 288-3519.

Bar Harbor Historical Society
The Bar Harbor Historical Society is located on Ledgelawn Avenue, a walk of about two blocks from the Island Explorer Village Green transit hub. For information, call 288-0000.

Great Harbor Maritime Museum
The Great Harbor Maritime Museum is located in the village of Northeast Harbor. The Jordan Pond and Brown Mountain buses stop nearby on Main Street in Northeast Harbor. For information, call 276-5262.

Jackson Laboratory
Jackson Lab scientists discuss their work at public forums as part of the Lab's summer visitor program. Presentations are offered most Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m. The Laboratory is served by the Blackwoods bus. For program information, call 288-6087.


MDI Biological Laboratory
The MDI Bio Lab is located in Salisbury Cove on the route of the Campground bus. The Lab offers free public tours on Wednesdays June through August 23. Tours are begin at 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. For more information, call 288-3147.

Mount Desert Island Historical Society
The Mount Desert Island Historical Society operates two facilities featuring rotating exhibits. The Somesville Museum is located on the route of the Southwest Harbor bus. The Sound School House Museum served by the Brown Mountain bus. For more information, call 276-9323.

Natural History Museum, College of the Atlantic
You can reach the College of the Atlantic's Natural History Museum on the Eden Street bus. Detailed exhibits depict the plant and animal life of Maine, showing how different species interact with natural and human environments.

Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery
The Oceanarium has facilities in Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor. The Southwest Harbor Oceanarium (244-7330) is located on the route of the Southwest Harbor bus. The Bar Harbor facility (288-5005) is served by the Campground bus.

Wendell Gilley Museum
The Wendell Gilley Museum of Bird Carving is located on the route of the Southwest Harbor bus. The bus stops in front of the museum. Come see the work of this world-renowned bird carver. For more information, call 244-7555.
