There are several ways to reach the Acadia region without a car. Choose an itinerary that matches your travel style. We'll provide you with inside tips on how to make smooth and easy connections.

PLEASE NOTE: ISLAND EXPLORER SERVICE WILL OPERATE FROM JUNE 23, 2007 THROUGH OCTOBER 8, 2007.

PLAN 1: Fly to Bar Harbor
US Airways offers direct flights from Boston's Logan International Airport to the Bar Harbor-Hancock County Airport. Free Island Explorer buses operate every half hour and hourly in the evening between the airport and the Bar Harbor Village Green. Rental cars and taxis are also available.

PLAN 2: Fly to Bangor
A variety of airlines offer flights to Bangor International Airport. The Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle offers up to five trips a day from Bangor to Bar Harbor, with pick-ups at the airport. Advance reservations are required. Vermont Transit operates a bus during the summer months that departs downtown Bangor for Bar Harbor at 5:40 pm. Rental cars and taxis are also available.

PLAN 3: Fly to Boston

Concord Trailways operates express motor coach service from Boston's Logan Airport to Bangor. The Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle offers five trips a day to Bar Harbor, with pick-ups at the Concord Trailways terminal in Bangor. Advance reservations are required. Vermont Transit operates one bus a day from South Station in Boston to Bar Harbor. This bus departs South Station at 1:05 p.m. and Bangor at 5:40 pm.

PLAN 4: Amtrak to Boston

Transfer from Amtrak to Vermont Transit or Concord Trailways at Boston's South Station. See Plan 6 for more information about bus links to Bar Harbor.

PLAN 5: Amtrak to Portland
Ride the Amtrak Downeaster from Boston to Portland, and transfer to Vermont Transit or Concord Trailways.

PLAN 6: Bus from Boston

Vermont Transit operates a local coach from Boston to Bar Harbor. Concord Trailways operates express coach service from Boston to Bangor. A local company offers a Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle, with four trips a day.

   

PLAN 7: Stopover in Portland

Use the Amtrak Downeaster, Concord Trailways, or Vermont Transit to reach Portland and stay there overnight. Use Concord Trailways or Vermont Transit to continue your trip the next day.This is a good alternative if you ride the afternoon Downeaster train to Portland, or if your plane or train arrives in Boston too late for a direct bus ride to Bar Harbor.

PLAN 8: Nova Scotia Ferry
Bay Ferries offers high-speed ferry service between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Bus service between Yarmouth and Halifax is operated by Trius Tours. An overnight stay is required for trips to or from Halifax.
